The New Store in La Honda

Welcome to a new segment of our Blog, one we hope to make a regular staple. Scott and I will be conducting interviews with various members of our mountain neighborhoods. We hope that by better getting to understand and know each other, the spirit of community will be enhanced. Our first interview is with Susan Purnell. We met the other day over coffee. She and her husband Aaron Kamic along with friend and landlord Glen Christensen, all La Honda residents, are the fearsome trio who have taken over and completely revamped the old market in town and boy do we need it. Apparently the project is almost 2 years in the making. What they lack in formal grocery background is more than made up in research, planning, energy and commitment to the community.

Karin Bird:
There is quite a bit of mystery and excitement in the community regarding the store… can you tell us how you came to take on this project?

Susan Purnell:
Glen and I happen to go to dinner at the Mountain House a couple of years ago and started chatting about the market. We both thought that is was such a shame that La Honda did not have a good grocery store and was something that the community really needed. We started calling with John and Min and that is how it all started.

KB:
I don’t want to keep calling it “the store”. What is the name of La Honda’s new market?

SP:
La Honda Country Market.

KB:
Could you describe to us your vision for the place?

SP:
A full fledged grocery store on a small scale. The deli is going to be a major focus with sandwiches, soups and pre-made meals. Lots of goodies for folks to take home and enjoy after a hard days work!

KB:
I think one of the biggest questions is what sorts of inventory will be available.? Additionally. What are your thoughts regarding local produce and products?

SP:
All the necessities, bread, milk, eggs, deli cheese and meats, paper towels, toilet paper. We just had a great road trip to Pescadero on Tuesday. We a working with Arcangeli, Blue House Farms, Duarte's, Harley, Phipps and Moonside Bakery in HMB. The list continues to grow which is fantastic!

KB:
What went into the thought process when deciding what your inventory would be?

SP:
We sent out a grocery survey form to all the PO boxes in La Honda and the feedback has been great. Secondly, is there are very few vendors that will come our way. So, we have to be creative which is fine with us! We are going to start small and gown with the needs of the community.

KB:
Okay 2 more questions… What would you like the community to know about what you are doing?

SP:
We are here for you! We will do all that we can to provided you with what you need and want. We are doing all we can to support thelocal businesses and farms around us. The closer to the source the better! Don't hesitate to let us know what you want. Brand names are welcomed!

KB:
And number one question- When will you be open?

SP:
If all continues to go as planned, the last Saturday in February..... so, keep your fingers crossed!
